Sierra Sportsmen
Photo Contest:
We Have Our Winners!

The Sierra Sportsmen Photo Contest had nearly 400 photos submitted. Hunters and anglers from all over the country sent in their beautiful, inspiring, and humorous photos of time spent outdoors.

Of those, the judges chose 12 finalists. Those 12 finalists were then whittled down by your votes (hundreds voted) to the 4 winners in 4 categories. Thanks to all of you who submitted photos and voted!

Here are your winners!

Winner Kid's Fishing- Jack Reneau of Missoula, Montana
$500 Gift Certificate to Bass Pro Shops

Story behind the photo:

Jack Reneau
"This photo is really a candid photo taken a number of years ago when I lived in the Washington, DC, area. It was taken the day I took all three of my sons {Richard (c.), Robert (l.), and John (r.)} fishing at one of the lakes at Quantico Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia. The bluegills were hitting fast and furious that day, and the boys were pulling them in as fast as my wife and I could put worms on their hooks. It was their first time fishing and they were having a great time. When Richard (posing with fish) caught his first fish, I took a series of three or four photos. I first took one of him by himself, and then I asked his brothers and my wife to get in the photo, which turned out exactly as you see it. I didn't direct John (on far right) to ham-it-up, nor did I ask Richard to put his thumb up. It just happened to turn out the way it did. John is the family ham to this day. It really is one of my all-time-favorite photos of my three sons and wife."

"Today, Richard is the most avid fisherman in our family. Since moving to Montana, he has become an expert fly fisherman. He always catches more fish than anyone who goes with him. One day, I spent 8 hours ice fishing with him. He caught his limit, and I caught nothing, in spite of the fact that he let me fish the same holes he used. I would fish one of his holes for an hour doing exactly what he did, and I wouldn't catch anything. Frequently, he would take over a hole I abandoned and within minutes he would catch a fish."

"Who knows, perhaps that bluegill is what sparked his lifetime interest in fishing."

Winner Kid's Hunting- David Hewitt of Kingsville, Texas
$500 Gift Certificate to Patagonia

Story behind the photo:

David Hewitt
"My son has been bit hard by the hunting and fishing bug. I once found him "fishing" in a bucket in our yard. In early September a couple years ago, my son was ready for hunting season to start, but rabbits were about the only small game open. Instead of forcing him to wait 2 more weeks until dove season opened, we went rabbit hunting on a ranch near our hometown of Kingsville, TX. We hunted for an hour without so much as seeing a rabbit. A little after 9:00 a.m., I spotted a rabbit sitting under a bush. I got my son pointed toward it and he shot it with his single-shot .22. On his way to pick it up, he stopped, raised his rifle, and shot again. There was a second rabbit I had not seen sitting near the first rabbit. My son shot this rabbit as well. The photo was taken walking back to our vehicle, bringing with us 2 rabbits and a morning of pleasant memories."

Winner Adult's Fishing- Paul Swanson of Longmont, Colorado
$500 Gift Certificate to Bass Pro Shops

Story behind the photo:

Paul Swanson
"The photo was taken in the Patagonia Region of Chile on a fishing vacation last March. This was my daughter's first ever salmon. Both my wife and I also caught salmon of similar size fishing from a boat on the Rio Yelcho. We would watch them rolling in the turquoise water as they were coming up the river to spawn. Thanks to all who voted for us."

Winner Adult's Hunting- Marjory McClaren of Kalispell, Montana
$500 Gift Certificate to Patagonia

Story behind the photo:

Marjory McClaren
"The mountain goat photo was taken while hiking the summit of Mt. Aeneas, which is located in the Jewel Basin wilderness area at the north end of the Swan mountain range in Northwest Montana."
